Written around the year 2003, this song was originally about Aung San Suu Kyi and her struggle to win her freedom in Burma. However, I didn't pen the lyrics until much later and overhauled them again prior to recording the song in 2011.
The concept is simple: without freeing one's love, there can be no freedom whether at liberty or incarcerated. While Aung San Suu Kyi may have won a battle in her personal war of liberty, there is much that each of us can do to earn our own.
This song is a anthemic testimony to that struggle.

LYRICS
You've seen them all running,
The villages burning,
In countries where the hearts are full of lead.
But where is the freedom,
When home is a prison,
And when love is measured only with our heads?
Cause every bullet shot you feel within,
Every bayonet you feel cut in,
Though not your life,
Just think what really dies,
When hatred wins.
When hatred wins.
CHORUS
Free your love,
Free your spirit,
Free your soul.
Free you love,
Free your spirit,
Free your soul.
Trapped in a culture,
Where every neighborhood out there,
Thinks freedom is the right to take what's mine.
But there cannot be freedom,
When fear is our weapon,
And war is on our doorsteps and our minds.
But every iron fist can be unclenched,
To turn a punch into the hand of friends.
We all build walls,
To protect what's vulnerable,
Like this you'll never win,
You'll never win.
CHORUS
Free your love,
Free your spirit,
Free your soul.
Free you love,
Free your spirit,
Free your soul.
And though you'll hide behind your barriers of fear,
There's only more illusions waiting there.
But if it's freedom you are really looking for,
Then open up your heart,
And look no more,
Look no more.
You've seen them all running,
The villages burning,
In countries where the hearts are full of lead.
But every iron fist can be unclenched,
To turn a punch into the hand of friends.
We all build walls,
To protect what's vulnerable,
So just be strong.
Just be strong!
CHORUS
Free your love,
Free your spirit,
Free your soul.
Free you love,
Free your spirit,
Free your soul.
